Can’t leave manufacturing to China, Rahul tells Indians in US
In a recent speech to the Indian diaspora in the United States, Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a strong appeal to the Indian community, urging them to not leave the country’s manufacturing sector to China. He emphasized the need for India to build its own industrial base, calling for greater investment in innovation, technology, and local production. Gandhi’s remarks reflect a growing sentiment in India about the importance of developing self-reliance in key sectors, especially manufacturing, amid global supply chain disruptions and rising geopolitical tensions.
Gandhi argued that while China has emerged as the “factory of the world” over the last few decades, India has the potential to become an industrial powerhouse in its own right. He pointed to the large labor force, entrepreneurial spirit, and natural resources available in India as key factors that could drive growth in manufacturing. However, he stressed that the Indian government needed to take a more active role in fostering this development by investing in infrastructure, education, and creating favorable policies for businesses to thrive.
The Congress leader also acknowledged the importance of a robust digital economy and innovation-driven growth. However, he cautioned against the over-reliance on foreign markets and the outsourcing of key industrial capabilities. He suggested that India’s future growth depends not just on service-based sectors but also on the revival and modernization of its manufacturing industries.
This speech resonates with India’s growing focus on Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and Make in India initiatives, which aim to reduce dependency on imports and encourage domestic production. Gandhi’s call to action also reflects a broader concern over the shifting dynamics in global trade, especially in light of the U.S.-China trade war and the ongoing reconfiguration of global supply chains.
By urging the Indian diaspora in the U.S. to invest in India’s manufacturing sector, Gandhi hopes to leverage the expertise, capital, and networks of the Indian community abroad to help realize India’s economic ambitions.
